Tom George

Bio: Tom George is a racehorse trainer based in Down Farm, Slad, Stroud, a place he’s lived all of his live.  A love of racing came easy for Tom, and he sought to expand his knowledge under the likes of
Gavin Pritchard-Gordon, the late Michael Jarvis and Martin Pipe.

This foundation led Tom George to his first winner, Newton Point at Worcester, in September 1993. Having trained over 700 winners since, 10 of which were grade one races (and two of those at Cheltenham) it’s clear that the quality shines through at the 400 acre Down Farm.

Tom enjoys exploring new bloodstock markets. and has has success with Polish horses, French bred horses, and Irish bred point to point graduates. A real mix.

2017 was the first year, after 25 years in racing, that Tom topped prize money of £1 million, which is both a sign of growing success, plus a cue that further investments might be taking place in order to push things to the next level. 2018 got off to a good start with 9-1 shot Summerville Boy winning the first race of the Cheltenham Festival, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.

Brian Ellison

Bio: Brian Ellison was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne in 1952 and is a successful UK horse trainer. Ellison trains at Spring Cottage Stables in Malton, North Yorkshire , a training environment that’s been up and running for some 17 years now.

In his youth Ellison aspired, like many boys, to be a footballer, but his diminutive height made being a jockey a more realistic proposition. Wasting no time, at 17 he took out a jockey’s license and there commenced a 20 year career of quite some aclaim. Keen to keep the momentum going he took out a trainers’ license that same year.

Brian has made his mark over the years and big wins followed, including grade oen wins such as the Coral Future Champions Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow in 2011, and the Betfred Ebor on the flat at York that same year. He’s known for his dual surface abilities. Ellison also has an enviable record in international races and at Irish Festivals.

James Ewart

Bio: James Eart is a successful national hunt and flat racing trainer from Scotland. His career started, as with many trainers, as an amateur jockey. After that education, he moved to Pupil Assistant Trainer to Ferdy Murph, then in the same dual capacity to Champion French Jumps Trainer, Guillaume Macaire, where Ewart won at France’s Auteuil racecourse multiple times, including a ride in the
100th Prix De France Champion Amateur Chase.

He then spent time in France with a well known bloodstock agent learning that aspect of the sport too. Combining al of this knowledge would later serve Ewart well as he looks to perfect training methods and improve his chances of winning the big races, Cheltenham’s Queen Mother Champion Chase being the one he’s especially got his eye on. Ewart is clearly should of the work he’s doing at Craig Farm, Dumfriesshire, and he has good reason to be!

Alan King

Bio: Alan King is a national hunt and flat horse trainer, who is based at Barbury Castle stables near Wroughton, Wiltshire. He sells himself as a ‘dual-purpose racehorse trainer’ though it was to be said that he mainly gets his results from the jumps.

His introduction to racing came as assistant trainer to David Nicholson until his retirement at which time he acquired a training license for himself. it proved to be a good decision as in 2016/17 alone he had 104 winners over the jumps and £1.4 million in prize money (as well as 19 winners over the flat and £260,00 in prize money).

Big Cheltenham Festival wins for Alan King have been a feature of his career. In the 2006 World Hurdle his horse My Way de Solzen triumphed, in 2007s Voy Por Ustedes won the Queen Mother Champion Chase and in 2008 Katchit won the Champion Hurdle. More recently he won the Ryan Air Chase with Uxizandre.

In recent years, King has continued to maintain a strong presence at the highest level of National Hunt racing, regularly surpassing the century mark in winners in seasons and adding further Grade 1 successes to his record. Horses such as Trueshan—who developed into one of the leading staying performers on the Flat-  underlined his dual-purpose credentials, while top hurdlers and chasers have ensured Barbury Castle remains a consistent source of major contenders at Cheltenham, Aintree and beyond.
