Gay Kelleway

Bio: Gay Kelleway describes herself as a ‘Racehorse Trainer and former Champion Lady Jockey’. She holds the accolade of being the first, and only, woman to have ridden a Royal Ascot winner almost 30 years ago. She trains at Queen Alexandra Stables, Exning, near Newmarket, Suffolk.

Starting out as a rider, Kelleway took out her trainer license in 1992. After moving around various stables she settled into Whitcombe Manor Stables in the Dorset countryside until 1998. At that time she moved moved to Lingfield racecourse, becoming the very first resident trainer there.

Big wins haven’t always come easy but there are some real stand outs such as Lightscameraction, a 20/1 winner the Sprint All-Weather Championships  at Lingfield in 2015. The win was worth close to £100,000. This more steadcy as you go attitude has paid off though, with Gay Kelleway amassing 600 winners in her career so far.

Charlie Mann

Bio: Charlie Mann is a national hunt horse trainer based at Neardown Stables, Upper Lambourn,
West Berkshire.  Mann’s career in racing began as a rider, where he amassed 149 winners over a 15 year timeframe. Serious injury though ended his career and after trying his hand at various other things, he came to realise that horse racing was his primary area of knowledge and so returned to the sport.

A period of assistant trainer under Cath Walwyn followed and in 1993 it was time for him to go it alone. Having experienced some early success in 1998, Mann bought Whitcoombe Stable. The move immediately made sense, with a grade one winner, Celibate, in the BMW Chase at Punchestown come soon after.

2008/2009 proved to be a good year resulting in £641,000 in prize money through 63 wins such. Moving to Neardown Stables (essentially just down the road!) in 2012, Charlie Mann continues to have success to this day with over 800 wins and counting!

Jamie Osbourne

Bio: Formerly a successful, if not universally popular, National Hunt jockey – he was, in fact, christened ‘Pompous Pilot’ by some of his erstwhile weighing-room colleagues – Jamie Osborne retired from racing riding in 1999 and took out a combined training licence shortly afterwards.

Based at The Old Malthouse in Upper Lambourn, near Hungerford, Berkshire, Osborne saddles the occasional runner ‘over the sticks’, but his focus is predominantly on Flat racing. Probably his best horse to date was Milk It Mick, who won the Tattersalls Somerville Stakes and the Darley Dewhurst Stakes, both at Newmarket, on his final two starts as a juvenile in 2003, but Osborne has enjoyed plenty more high-profile successes over the years.

He has saddled half a dozen winners at Royal Ascot, winning the Windsor Castle Stakes twice, with Irony in 2001 and Drawnfromthepast in 2007, the Queen Alexandra Stakes with Enjoy The Moment in 2007, the Buckingham Palace Stakes with Treadwell in 2010, the Royal Hunt Cup with Field Of Dream in 2014 and the Britannia Stakes with Defrocked in 2016.

Osborne has occasionally courted controversy, including when fined £4,000 by the Jockey Club for bringing racing into disrepute in 2002, after being secretly filmed making unguarded comments in the BBC Kenyon Confronts documentary, ‘They Fix Races, Don’t They?’ .

Ben Pauling

Bio: Ben Pauling first took out a training licence, in his own right, in 2013, having worked for six years as assistant trainer to Nicky Henderson in Lambourn, and wasted no time in demonstrating his credentials.

Based at Bourton Hill Farm, near Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire, Pauling saddled nine winners in his first season and has steadily increased that total year-by-year.  In 2017/2018, he enjoyed his most successful season, so far, with 36 winners and £396,275 in prize money.

Highlights of his career include victories for Barters Hill in the Challow Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury in 2015 and Willoughy Court in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2017; the latter was his first and, so far, only, winner at the Cheltenham Festival. Nevertheless, in 2017 Pauling was sent his first horse by leading owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, Delire D’Estruval, who carried their familiar two-tone green colours to victory in novice hurdles at Haydock and Towcester before finishing down the field in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in 2018.

Standout recent victories include Polydora winning the Grade 2 Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham in 2022 and Zambella claiming the Grade 2 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle Trial at Haydock in 2024, highlighting his skill in developing top-class novices. Pauling remains a trainer to watch for future Cheltenham Festival success and has no shortage of wins so far in the 2026 season.
