Tim Vaughan

Bio: Tim Vaughan first took out a full training licence in November, 2005, but it was his move to upgraded facilities at Pat Wilkin Stables in Aberthin, near Cowbridge, in the Vale of Glamorgan in 2008 that marked the start of his ascent through the training ranks.

In 2007/08 Vaughan saddled 14 winners, but increased that total to 55 in 2008/09, 88 in 2009/10 and 91 in 2010/11. In 2011/12, he trained his first Grade 1 winners – Saint Are in the John Smith’s Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree and Spirit Of Adisa in the Cathal Ryan Memorial Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown – and, in between times, also won the Grade 3 Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr with Beshabar. All in all, that season Vaughan saddled 102 winners – making him, at the age of 32, the youngest of the current crop of National Hunt trainers to reach that landmark – and won £547, 817 in prize money.

Although, in recent years, Vaughan has concentrated on increasing the overall quality of his string – not least by focussing on young, untested horses, a.k.a. “stores” – at the time of writing, he currently lies twenty-third in the National Hunt Trainers’ Championship, with 15 winners from 133 runners and £120, 579 in prize money.

Venetia Williams

Bio: Venetia Williams started off her involvement in racing as a  jockey – something she stuck with for two years. She won a few races but was aware of limitations. A serious neck fracture, which she was lucky to recover from ended her career as a jockey and so becoming a trainer seemed like a logical next step.

Under the tutelage of John Edwards, Martin Pipe, Barry Hills and Colin Haye, Williams honed her abilities and decided to go it alone in 1995. A wise decision by all accounts. Starting with a 6 horse yeard, her first big success was Teeton Mill. The 9 year old went on to win Hennessy Gold Cup and the King George VI Chase.

Early in her career as a jockey, Wiliams had been knocked unconscious during a fall in the Grand National. It’s somewhat serendipitous then that as trainer Williams managed to win the Aintree Grand National with Mom Mome, a 100-1 outsider. A healthy dose of good fortunate to make up for misfortunes of the past.

Richard Spencer

Bio: Richard Spencer is a UK horse trainer based at Sefton Lodge.  He’s currently part of the Rebel Racing partnership between himself and owner/breeder Phil Cunningham. In 2016 they experienced success at Royal Ascot (Rajasinghe winning the Coventry Stake). The pair are also located at Albert House Stables, with the addition Sefton Lodge facilities coming into play in 2018, speaking to their continued success.

An accomplished race rider himself with 25 wins over Point-to-Point, and also rode as an amateur winning the Royal Artillery Gold Cup at Sandown and
Hunter Chase at Ascot. In learning the training ropes with Peter Bowen, Barry Hills, Charlie Hills and Michael Bellover a ten year plus period, there can have been no better education and foundation to work from. His training license was awarded to him in 2016 and good things are expected. The
Rajasinghe Royal Ascot win was the perfect start.

David Pipe

Bio: David Pipe is, of course, the son of the legendary Martin Pipe, who won the National Hunt Trainers’ Championship 15 times between 1988/89 and 2004/05 and, in so doing, revolutionised the training of National Hunt racehorses.

Pipe Jnr. took over the licence at Pond Hill Stables in Nicholashayne, near Wellington, Somerset following the retirement of his father in April, 2006. David Pipe made a flying start to his training career, saddling his first, second and third winners on the same day at Kelso the following month and finishing the season with 134 winners and over £1.6 million in prize money.

That season, in which he became the first trainer to saddle one hundred winners in a debut season, finished third in the National Hunt Trainers’ Championship and saddled his first Cheltenham Festival winner, Gaspara, owned by his father, in the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, proved to be his best yet.

Although his record will always be compared, rather unfairly, with that of his father, David Pipe has saddled over 1,000 winners, including victories at every National Hunt racecourse in the country and 14 at the Cheltenham Festival.

His career highlights at Prestbury Park include the Ryanair Chase twice, with Our Vic in 2008 and Dynaste in 2014, the Arkle Challenge Trophy with Western Warhorse in 2014 and the Champion Bumper with Moon Racer in 2015, while he also saddled the 2008 Grand National winner Comply Or Die.
