Gay Kelleway
Bio: Gay Kelleway describes herself as a ‘Racehorse Trainer and former Champion Lady Jockey’. She holds the accolade of being the first, and only, woman to have ridden a Royal Ascot winner almost 30 years ago. She trains at Queen Alexandra Stables, Exning, near Newmarket, Suffolk.
Starting out as a rider, Kelleway took out her trainer license in 1992. After moving around various stables she settled into Whitcombe Manor Stables in the Dorset countryside until 1998. At that time she moved moved to Lingfield racecourse, becoming the very first resident trainer there.
Big wins haven’t always come easy but there are some real stand outs such as Lightscameraction, a 20/1 winner the Sprint All-Weather Championships at Lingfield in 2015. The win was worth close to £100,000. This more steadcy as you go attitude has paid off though, with Gay Kelleway amassing 600 winners in her career so far.
