Mick Appleby

Bio: Michael ‘mick’ Appleby started his career with a stint as head lad at Andrew Baldings Kingsclere stable, then decided to go it alone in 2010.

With training facilities located close to Southwell Racecourse (Langham Racing Stables, near Oakham, Rutland) , Appleby has found himself with a reputation as the trainer to follow on All Weather at Southwell. He was crowned champion trainer at the track  in 2014, 2015, 2016, and again in 2017.

Appleby has upped his number of wins year on year, with 15 in 2011, 40 in 2012 and 61 in 2013. Stand out wins for the trainer include but are not limited to Demora in the group one William Hill Scottish Sprint Cup at Musselburgh, and Danzeno winning the Betfred TV Chipchase Stakes and the Totescoop6 Heritage Handicap at Ascot.

His stable star Big Evs provided a breakthrough on the global stage when landing the Group 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Santa Anita in 2023, before adding further top-level success in the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2024. Appleby has also continued to excel in major handicaps and on the all-weather circuit, frequently finishing among the leading trainers at the All-Weather Championships Finals Day at Newcastle.
