Roger Fell

Roger Fell is a fairly recent addition to the training ranks, having bought his current base, Arthington Barn Stables in Nawton, North Yorkshire in 2008, but not taking over the training licence, in his own right, until 2016. In his first season, Fell saddled just eight winners, but increased his tally to 34 in 2017 and 56 in 2018; in 2019, 94 winners and amassed over £355,657 in winner earnings, enjoying his most successful campaign. More recently in 2022 he had 40 winners, and in 2023 48 ( £264,075). I wonder what 2024 will bring.

In his short career, his stable star has undoubtedly been the Lope De Vega gelding Burnt Sugar, owned by Middleham Park Racing, who has won three valuable seven-furlong handicaps, including the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket and the International Stakes at Ascot in 2018, and even tried his luck, without success, in the Group One Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on his final start of the season. Caspian Prince, now in the care of Michael Appleby, was also a decent money-spinner for Fell, winning his first two starts for the yard, including the Listed Mercury Stakes at Dundalk, in late 2016. A former haulage businessman, Fell has already proved himself quite adept in his new career, so should continue to progress through the training ranks. Fell works alongside head trainer Sean Murray as part of Nawton Racing .

Tony Carroll

Formerly stable jockey to Pat Taylor and Stan Mellor, for six years apiece before turning freelance, Tony Carroll took out a public training licence in 1995 and, since 2006, has operated a mixed yard from purpose-built premises at Cropthorne Stud, near the market town of Pershore in Worcestershire.

In August, 2015, Carroll saddled four winners – Easydoesit (5/2), Pyrocumulus (5/1), Queen Aggie (14/1) and Essaka (6/1) – from five runners at Brighton for a memorable 2,204/1 four-timer. Indeed, that year he achieved 58 winners on the Flat, which was, at the time, his highest total ever. However, his most successful season, so far, came in 2018, when he saddled 61 winners on the Flat and won nearly £464,000 in prize money.

Big race successes have been few and far between, but Carroll has a couple of Listed race wins to his name, courtesy of Dijarvo in the Prix La Fleche at Maisons-Laffite in 2011 and Le Bacardy in the Scotty Brand Handicap Chase at Ayr in 2014. He also saddled Caspian Prince to win the Investec Specialist Bank ‘Dash’ at Epsom in 2014 and the Meydan Sobha Handicap at Meydan in the United Arab Emirates in 2015. More recently, two more valuable handicap victories have come his way, courtesy of Havana Beat in the Pinsent Handicap Hurdle at Aintree in 2018 and Recon Mission in the Pavers Foundation Catherine Memorial Sprint Handicap at York in 2019.

In the years since, Carroll has continued to be a formidable presence in the Flat racing, regularly sending out winners from his Worcestershire base. He’s been secod to none in competitive handicaps. By 2026, he remains firmly established as one of the top trainers in the current flat reacing season.

Richard Hughes

Former champion jockey Richard Hughes is the son of the late Dessie Hughes, a leading Irish National Hunt trainer, and the son-in-law of Richard Hannon Snr., who was, until August, 2018, the most successful trainer in Britain. Notwithstanding his considerable success in the saddle – in a 25-year career, he rode 2,425 on the Flat in Britain alone and was champion jockey in 2012, 2013 and 2014 – Hughes was probably always destined to become a trainer.

Hughes made a quick transition to his new career following his retirement from race riding after ‘Glorious Goodwood’ in July, 2015 and, despite a ‘false start’ at Danebury Stables in Stockbridge, Hampshire, which lasted just four months, finally settled at Weathercock House in Upper Lambourn, Berkshire in November that year. Indeed, his first runner from his new base, Duchess Of Marmite, was a winner.

After a relatively low-key start to his training career – 2015, as whole, yielded just nine winners, but at a healthy strike rate of 21% – Hughes increased his tally to 36 winners in 2016 and 63 winners in 2017. In 2018, his seasonal total dropped, by just one, from the previous campaign, but he enjoyed his most prosperous year, so far, in pecuniary terms, with nearly £590,000 in total earnings. Big race success remains elusive, but his best horse, so far, has been the 102-rated Scat Daddy gelding Glendevon.

Keith Dalgleish

Formerly stable jockey to Mark Johnston, Keith Dalgleish was forced to give up professional race riding in 2004, at the age of just 21, when the filling out of his six-foot frame made it impossible to maintain his weight at the required level without constant wasting. However, since turning his hand to training in 2011 and taking over at the privately-owned Belstane Racing Stables in Carluke, South Lanarkshire the following year, Dalgleish has become one of the top trainers in Scotland.

In his first year in the training ranks, Dalgleish saddled a highly respectable 39 winners from 257 runners, at a strike rate of 15%, but has saddled at least 50 winners in every season since. His best season, so far, numerically, came in 2017, when he saddled 86 winners. The following season, thanks in no small part to the victory of Summer Daydream in the Two Year Old Trophy at Redcar – worth £99,242 to the winner – Dalgleish enjoyed his best campaign, so far, in monetary terms, with just over £849,000 in win and place prize money. One of the best horses to pass through his hands was Clem Fandango, owned by Middleham Park Racing, who was placed in the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2016, before winning the Listed Harry Rosebery Stakes at Ayr later the same season.
