Can Any Future Trainer Replicate the Success of Willie Mullins at the Cheltenham Races?

Irish horse trainer William Peter Mullins, better known as Willie Mullins, is one of the most respected and accredited horse trainers we’ll likely ever see. The 69-year-old is the most successful trainer in the history of the Cheltenham Festival, having saddled 113 winners as of 2025.
And we do not doubt that he is waiting to make that 114 at Cheltenham 2026, with Mullins having entered 52 horses for Cheltenham’s novice and juvenile races, including the favourite to win in the Cheltenham Festival betting books, Galopin des Champs for the hurdles.
Can Any Future Trainer Replicate the Success of Willie Mullins at Cheltenham? Read on to find out.
The Success of Willie Mullins at the Cheltenham Races
Mullins celebrated 10 years at the Cheltenham Festival in 2025, where each year seemed better than the last for a man who has seen it all at the iconic Cheltenham Racecourse. At the 2025 event, he took home the Leading Trainer award for the 12th time, breaking his own record that he set in 2022, having won it more than any trainer.
In a candid article published on the official Cheltenham Festival website, he recalled how “it surprises me how we keep raising the bar.” We are gobsmacked with the owners we have and the horses we have. We pinch ourselves every evening when you check all the horses.”
Since training his first winner in the competition in 1995, winning the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, he’s gone on to have one of the most celebrated careers in the industry, by far amongst trainers, with some of his biggest victories including:
- 4 wins in the Champion Hurdle (2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016)
- 2 wins in the Stayers’ Hurdle (2017 and 2018)
- 2 consecutive wins in the Gold Cup with Al Boum Photo (2019 and 2020)
Let’s see if he can do the same at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival, with Cheltenham festival betting tipping heavily toward Mullins-trained Galopin des Champs for the Gold Cup win.
Can Any Other Trainer Replicate Mullins’ Success?
Probably not. And we could end this section here.
There aren’t many other trainers as successful and well-known as Willie Mullins. He is quite literally a legend, and he doesn’t seem to be slowing down soon. His son Patrick mentioned in an interview with the BBC in April 2025 that he doesn’t see his dad retiring and instead thinks he’s only going to get more ambitious.
That said, it’s not like Mullins is running around like he used to. Now employing over 100 people at his training yard near Muine Bheag in Co Carlow, Ireland, the man who transformed the face of jump racing has enough help that he can keep going.
With over 4,000 total wins, we’ll be excited to see if he can reach 114 Cheltenham Festival wins next month.
Which Other Trainers Compare?
No other trainer compares, but some do come close if we’re looking at just numbers. Some of the other successful trainers include:
- Paul Nicholls
- Aidan O’Brien
- Andrew Balding
- Sir Henry Cecil
- Ginger McCain
Those are a mix of international and British trainers, but even though they’re all incredible trainers with plenty of wins, they’re nowhere near Willie Mullins. And in terms of success at Cheltenham, we doubt anyone will ever get so close to beating his numbers.
Willie Mullins will go down in history as the greatest British horse trainer. He’s perfected the art of horse training, setting industry standards, and outpacing anyone in the industry. Let’s see how his horses perform at the 2026 event. The Cheltenham Festival runs from March 10th to the 13th, 2026, with tickets still on sale.
